Every Level 2 EV charger gets connected to your electrical panel one of two ways: hardwired directly into a dedicated circuit, or plugged into a 240V outlet - almost always a NEMA 14-50. The choice affects your cost, your charging speed, and in some cases isn’t really a choice at all, because the charger you bought decided for you.
The difference, plainly
Plug-in (NEMA 14-50): the electrician installs a 240V outlet, same physical style as a large RV or range outlet. Your charger has a cord and plug, and you can unplug it, take it with you, or swap chargers later without an electrician.
Hardwired: the electrician wires the charger directly into a dedicated circuit, no plug, no outlet. It’s a permanent installation - the unit isn’t going anywhere without an electrician disconnecting it first.
Cost difference

Charging speed is the real reason to hardwire
This is usually the deciding factor, not preference. A NEMA 14-50 outlet is rated for a 50-amp circuit, and under the National Electrical Code’s continuous-load rule that limits a plug-in charger to about 40 amps of actual charging current. If you want 48 amps or more - noticeably faster overnight charging - your charger has to be hardwired on a larger circuit (commonly 60A for 48A output). The GFCI issue pushing electricians toward hardwiring
Recent National Electrical Code cycles require GFCI protection for 240V receptacles in garages, and a GFCI 2-pole breaker can add $100-$250 to a plug-in install. Some plug-in chargers have their own built-in ground-fault protection, and running that behind a GFCI breaker too causes nuisance tripping - two protection systems disagreeing with each other. Hardwiring sidesteps this specific headache, which is part of why electricians increasingly recommend it even when a slower charger doesn’t strictly require the extra amperage. Ask your electrician directly whether your specific charger model has had GFCI compatibility issues before you decide.
Which one should you choose?
Choose plug-in (NEMA 14-50) when: you want the flexibility to unplug and take the charger with you, your charger is fine topping out around 40A, and you’d rather pay less upfront.
Choose hardwired when: you want 48A+ charging speed, your charger’s manufacturer requires it (Tesla Wall Connector, some other premium units), or your electrician flags a GFCI compatibility issue with the plug-in option.
Neither choice affects the legal requirement. Both are licensed electrical work in Texas - a hardwired circuit and a new 240V outlet are both alterations that require a licensed electrical contractor and, in almost every Texas city, a permit and inspection. A contractor offering to skip either step because “it’s just an outlet” is cutting a corner that will be there when you sell the house.
Common questions
Can I switch from plug-in to hardwired later? Yes, but it’s a second job, not an upgrade you do yourself - the electrician disconnects the outlet circuit and either reuses the wire (if it’s sized correctly) or runs new wire and terminates it at the charger. Ask what your existing wire gauge supports before assuming a straight swap.
Is a hardwired charger safer than a plug-in one? Both are safe when installed and permitted correctly by a licensed electrician. The GFCI compatibility issue above is a nuisance-tripping problem, not a safety gap in the plug-in option itself.
